A little known fact is that Fancy Tiger in its origin was not a business, but a band. Owner Matthew Brown spent a few weeks in 2004 recording the beginnings of a Fancy Tiger album in an abandoned warehouse on a small gulf coast island called Galveston. Those few weeks produced only two rough demos that stayed hidden away on close friends iPods. By recommendation of one of the bands fans, the name got tossed around for consideration when the time came to christen the shop that Matthew and wife Jaime were about to open in Denver. It stuck.
Matthew and Jaime opened the Fancy Tiger retail store in 2006 on South Broadway as a multi-conceptual space combining craft supplies and apparel from smaller lessor known lines. The store’s mission was to bring two things to Denver that the city lacked, men and women’s apparel that spoke to the timeless aesthetic of clean and modern lines and a modern fiber boutique that also served as a resource for craft classes.
Denver responded favorably to this “DIY store” and the shop eventually outgrew the modest corner space at Ellsworth and South Broadway. The solution was obvious and in 2008 the stores were split into separate spaces as Fancy Tiger Clothing and Fancy Tiger Crafts. Four years later, Fancy Tiger Clothing sits in an old Woolworth’s building just one block north of it’s original location. Local favorites Buffalo Exchange and Fancy Tiger Crafts joined the Clothing store to help fill out the massive space.
Since 2006, the neighborhood has changed but the clothing store has stayed true to its original goal of “providing clothes for the modern man and woman”. You can still find that well designed t-shirt for under thirty bucks but maybe also a beautiful silk dress for a rocky mountain summer wedding party. We’ve grown up a bit.
Our mission is to steer you in the right direction when it comes to making decisions about how to express yourself with your clothes, your music, and just about anything else you could ask us about. We sponsor the best dj nights in town, we throw monthly parties to celebrate our favorite designers, musicians, and small businesses, and we might even encourage you to go sell your car and buy a scooter. We are tastemakers. We are Fancy Tiger Clothing.
